Today we had a critique of our calendar project. I should but more detail in the TV, make it more interesting seeing as it is the focus. I have tested to see if the whole calendar would fit on the computer screen when exported. The frankenstein monster should be slightly darker as to not pull focus. Maybe see if it is centered completely because people commented that it seems to be left heavy which might just be from the frankenstein monster being too bright.

Week 5A
9/21/15
After some peer criticism and suggestions I have finally finished the calendar project.
I decided to make the monsters and couch more like silhouettes. This fits more with the dark room with the central light idea I had earlier. I was making details for the wolf monster but then I saw that it was too busy, and kind of distracting, plus I was just all around unsatisfied with the product. I used the gradient tool to give the table a burnt wood carving look. I added lines and circles to generalize the small detail in wood. This generalization comes from the cartoon like style that I decided to go for established in my mood board. I was going to put the clock on the bottom of the table like the blu ray player and cable box but I decided to us it in the background instead because it fill a large opening of negative space. I also put the smashing logo on a picture in the background for the same reason, putting it on the opposite side of course to make the image some what symmetrical. The main light source is the TV which is why the the light is an orange to black gradient.

Week 4C
9/20/15
We had to watch 2 movies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jxf4lfaG6g and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDsYzyAAADM. The first one was very basic. It involved writing text, changing the font size, and changing the color. The second one went into a lot more detail. It went over the character panel, showing how to change x height, leading, underlines, capitals, and character rotation. There was also a paragraph panel that helped align text. It seemed very similar to a word processor. It also showed how to create and save your own styles of text to use for later.

Week 4B
9/16/15
Today we had a brief lesson on typography. It wasn't anything really new seeing as I'm also currently taking a typography course that goes into much more detail. Then the rest of the class was used to continue working on the calendar project.
Not everything is to scale yet.till have to draw the monsters. The table is not in the correct point of view, I will need to change that later. I have used a little bit of gradients but not many. I think my ending product will have many gradients. I have some details on the couch but I'm thinking I might get rid of them if I decide to make it more of a silhouette.

Week 4A
09/14/15
Today we had a brief lesson on typography. We learned very basic material such as the difference between a serif and sans serif, and how to give certain information emphasis. It was kind of a quick review of what I learned in the first week of typography which I am also taking currently. After that we got to start on our calendar projects. So far I really just traced outlines of photographed objects and turned them into vector graphics. Because I experimented with my photos, I had to draw an overlapping object. I did this by adding a new layer and tracing over the parts I wanted to merge from my photographs. The overlapping layer was drawn with a green stroke. I kept a copy of every object I made just in case something happens.

Week 3C
9/13/15
We needed to take 5-10 photos not from the internet to help us decide a composition for our calendar projects. After we take the photos we needed to make 5-10 sketches to help us with our composition.

This allowed me to think of a composition involving a TV, a couch, and 2 people. The two people will be movie monsters, and they will be watching TV. The TV, I was thinking of being the actual calendar. The main light source will be the TV so it will be bright in the middle and dark as it gets closer to the edge.

Week 3B
9/11/2015
We were to watch 3 educational videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmw0hJO-yAM, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-dh-lSRWfk, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61D6g7joq2Q.
The first video was about using the layer panel. This allows you to add and subtract layers in Illustrator. When you delete a layer you can move it to the trash can or you can hit the down arrow an select delete the selected layer which can be helpful because you can see the selected layer before deleting it. A shortcut to the layer panel can be found by hitting F7. It is actually possible to hide layers with the layers menu.
The second video was about adding multiple strokes. This can be done with the appearance panel. A shortcut can be found by hitting shift+F6. The appearance panel will tell you if the object selected is in a group or not. To make another stroke, double click the stroke and align another stroke to the outside or the inside.
The third video was about tracing artwork with the pen tool. This is best done when a new layer is placed on top of the artwork you are trying to trace. It is best to trace with only a stroke and no fill. It is very similar to what we did earlier in class with the logos. Hitting options or alt will change the direction of the curves which is very helpful.

Week 2C
9/4/2015
I took another look at my mood board and thought to myself this might be too busy. There a certainly some good ideas but there are too many ideas found on my mood board. I guess I will have to narrow down and focus on more specific aspects for the final product.

Week 3A
9/9/2015
Today we learned very briefly about copyright laws. Then we learned about visual syntax and how it was important to have focus in our images so they don't lose meaning or become distracting. This was important because I felt my mood board had lost focus and became too weird. Then we did a team exercise were we look at the mood boards of the people in our group and tried to think of a composition for our calendar project for our other team members using their mood boards. My group an I came up with an idea of friends watching a movie. Those friends just happen to be horror movie monsters.

Week 2B
9/2/2015
Today we were assigned to design a calendar for October that would be due later. To get started we did a learning exercise called a mind map. We were given the theme October and were told to just right down what came first to our minds. My mind went all over the place, from candy to movie monsters and video games to colors.
Then we did another learning exercise called a mood boarding. This is basically a collage of images to find out an idea of what the feel and look of the calendar project we would be doing. It seems like it is going to be like a strange movie or video game with a large contrast of light an dark colors.
